Why visit?
This mysterious underground atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the world. Walking between the columns and hearing the water is spellbinding. The Medusa heads are the stuff of legend.
Short History
The cistern was built during the reign of Justinian (527–565) and supplied water to the Byzantine palace. It stayed in use for a while under the Ottomans, then fell into neglect once new systems were built to supply Topkapı Palace. It was brought back to light in the middle of the 16th century by the French traveller Petrus Gyllius; the exact year differs from source to source. After restoration work in 1985–1987 it opened to visitors on 9 September 1987.
About
Built in AD 532 by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, the Basilica Cistern is Istanbul's largest underground cistern. Spreading over 9,800 m² and carried on 336 columns, this mysterious space once supplied water to the Great Palace. Two Medusa heads standing in the water and the atmospheric lighting make for an unforgettable visit.
It is cool and damp inside — even in summer a light jacket helps. The Medusa heads are in the far corner; don't miss them. Since it stays open until 22:00, an evening visit is far more enjoyable and much less crowded.
