Why visit?
No other city in the world gathers this many historic buildings in one place. Hagia Sophia in one shot, the Blue Mosque in the next. Crossing the square, you are walking over 2,000 years of layered history.
Short History
Begun in AD 203 by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus and completed as the great hippodrome by Constantine I in AD 330, the site held 100,000 people and was the largest public space in Byzantium. Chariot racing ended under the Ottomans, but the square kept its historic importance, and with the building of the Blue Mosque it became the city's new centre.
About
Laid out over the Roman hippodrome where chariot races were once held, Sultanahmet Square is the historic heart of Istanbul. Home to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern, it is one of the densest concentrations of history anywhere in the world. Monuments including the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column, the Walled Obelisk and the German Fountain stand side by side on the square.
Watch out for tourist traps on the square — prices at the surrounding cafes and restaurants can be steep. Meşale is a 4 minute walk away; taste real Turkish cooking there.
