Why visit?
It isn't something you could miss as you cross the square, but stepping inside and looking up at the gold mosaics in the dome is a lovely surprise.
Short History
The fountain was built to commemorate Kaiser Wilhelm II's visit to Istanbul in 1898. Its parts were made in Germany, shipped to Istanbul and assembled on Sultanahmet Square in 1901.
About
The German Fountain was commissioned in 1898 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as a gift to the Ottoman sultan Abdülhamid II. Standing at the northern end of Sultanahmet Square, this octagonal structure is built in the neo-Byzantine style and catches the eye with its gold-mosaic dome and graceful arches.
Most visitors walk straight past the fountain — stop for a minute and step inside. The mosaics in the dome come as a surprise.
