Gülhane Park
The green lungs of the historic peninsula — plane trees, rose gardens and Bosphorus views.
From Meşale Restaurant & Cafe to Gülhane Park
Why visit?
For escaping the crowds of Sultanahmet and resting in the shade of a plane tree. The tulips in spring are magnificent. The tea garden with its Bosphorus view is a lovely place for a break.
Short History
From the 15th to the 19th century the park served as the outer garden of Topkapı Palace. The Edict of Gülhane was proclaimed here in 1839. It opened to the public as a park in 1912. In recent years it has been extensively renewed: the zoo and funfair were removed and the green space enlarged.
About
Once the outer garden of Topkapı Palace, Gülhane Park opened to the public in 1912 and is one of Istanbul's oldest parks. With its rose gardens, century-old plane trees, walking paths and Bosphorus views, it is an oasis in the middle of the city. It hosts the tulip festival in spring and is perfect for a quiet break.
Come in early April during the tulip festival — the riot of colour is magnificent. A pot of Turkish tea in the tea garden with the Bosphorus in front of you is the best break of the day.
