Why visit?
The oldest known peace treaty (the Treaty of Kadesh, 1259 BC), the Alexander Sarcophagus, and the title of the world's first archaeology museum. One step away from crowded Sultanahmet, calm and captivating.
Short History
The museum was founded in 1891 through the efforts of the painter and archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey. Finds brought from across the Ottoman Empire were gathered here. The museum building is one of the finest neoclassical structures in Istanbul.
About
Founded in 1891 by Osman Hamdi Bey, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums bring three separate museums under one roof: the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Ancient Orient and the Tiled Kiosk. Holding around one million objects, the complex is among the largest archaeology museums in the world. On display here are the Alexander Sarcophagus (today accepted not to have belonged to Alexander the Great), the tablets of the Treaty of Kadesh — the oldest known peace treaty — and finds from Babylon.
It is right next to Topkapı Palace — you can see both museums in one day. But the Archaeology Museum is closed on Tuesdays, and so is Topkapı. Bear that in mind when planning the two.
